More links!

I will have actual content one day -- probably about a month after IBARW, after I have done nothing but knit and play with rats.

  • [info]liviapenn has a good round up of links following [info]zvi_likes_tv's attempts to let [info]daily_deviant mods know that "miscegenation" is a racist term Note that she is not passing judgment on kinks, nor is she asking them to remove that particular kink as a prompt. She's just asking to use something not racist as a tag, like "mixed race" or "interracial." I would comment, except my head exploded at the goats. In conclusion, I need to make myself a "Please don't be stupid" icon.

  • In non-head-exploding news: Ang Lee's new movie! Lust, Caution (you have to navigate to it, yay Flash?) is set in 1920s Shanghai, starring a woman who must get closer to a prominent political leader to assassinate him. Cold female assassins! 1920s Shanghai! Period clothing! Dysfunctional romances that are doomed to tragic failure with maximum angst! And! Tony Leung plays the male lead. I swoon.

  • I also want to see King and the Clown, which looks like it has gender bending! Also, [info]rachelmanija, I am hoping that it will blend the theater with backstage drama!

ETA: And for anyone keeping track, the mods have posted their open letter to [info]zvi_likes_tv, which I am not linking to. You can go to the comm and whip out your Anti-Racism Bingo cards. I can't decide what my favorite part is: their decrying "Americanism" at the request to change "miscegenation" to "interracial" (because if it's offensive in another country, it means we can keep using it with no worries!) or their rabid insistence that they are not racist no no no way not at all nothing has been racist here even though we're using a racist term! I particularly laugh at how they link to the Wiki article on miscegenation and handily decide that even though it references Nazis, apartheid, and notes that the word is generally considered offensive in English-speaking countries.

I am sure someone will pop up and say I am being English-centric because of the above, because it's not like we should ever worry about something being offensive in the language we choose to use.

In conclusion: my eyes roll forever, and quite honestly, I hope people end up leaving that comm in droves.

In conclusion, I need to make myself a "Please don't be stupid" icon.

You could even make it a Pembleton icon: "Please don't be an idiot. Thank you." I swear I've seen one of those around somewhere...

Oooh! Yes! I vaguely remember that as well. I heart Pembleton.

Ooh, definitely see The King and the Clown if you get the chance--it's a gorgeous, heartbreaking movie.

Eeee! I am really looking forward to it!

"The King and the Clown" is a gorgeous movie, and there is a bit of gender bending. I have to warn you, though, the protag is pretty useless. Had I known that before watching, I would have spent a lot less time yelling at the screen.

Ooh, ok, thanks for the warning. I really need to watch more Korean cinema of the non-horror variety.

Can't help you with that, yet, but I can point you at music videos and variety shows and celebrity game shows. *looks innocent*

Oh, you are evil ;);.

[info]seajules

Well, yes, but this is less about how I'm evil and more about how I'm predisposed toward liking very pretty boys. And deep-voiced women.

I do not feel I should trust you! And yet, I feel a strangely irresistible urge to ask about deep-voiced women!

Aww, but I'm very trustworthy. *G*

Cheon Sang Ji Hee, which includes Lina, who can go beautifully low, and Stephanie, whose voice is so soulful and gorgeous. And Dana, whose voice isn't as deep, but who is in this icon.

Ooh 'Lust Caution' looks good. I have to say though, Tony Leung's starting to lose his prettiness for me. I guess I've been looking at too many wrinkle-less anime boys for my own good!

*gasps* No Tony Leung for you! But that just means more for me. ;)

Tony Leung! (Also, the other guy in that trailer is awfully pretty too...)

I was very intrigued by that article on King and the Clown. Meanwhile, I am halfway through watching The Host, largely because I want to see the scene shot by my parents' apartment.

[info]oyceter

July 31 2007, 05:01:58 UTC 4 years ago

Oh. I didn't even notice the other guy! Must watch again.

Gah! I just went to look at the website of The Host, got to the opening flash animation, and then freaked out so much that I had to close it.

I have not watched very much of it, but it is so far much more goofy than scary.

[info]oyceter

August 1 2007, 23:40:59 UTC 4 years ago

Oh that is good! I am, as you can tell, completely wimpy when it comes to scary things ;).

Holy crap, Lust, Caution looks AWESOME. Tony Leung, dude. What a face. That looks like a melodrama of the highest order.

According to IMDb, it's getting limited release in USA on 9/28. Woe! I want it now!

July 31 2007, 05:02:36 UTC 4 years ago

OMG I KNOW! I saw the trailer before Knocked Up (of all movies....) and just sat there, drooling. And then they would introduce yet another element that hit all my buttons!

I am DYING for this movie. DYING I tell you. Those glasses! Those parasols! The clothes! YUM.

And yet---what's with the crappy title?

[info]oyceter

August 1 2007, 23:40:37 UTC 4 years ago

I know! It looks so gorgeous!

[info]coffeeandink says that it is directly from an Eileen Chang story, so I am wondering if it is a strange translation? Hrm. Checked Wikipedia and the title looks strange and abbreviated in Chinese as well. Interesting.

Tony Leung! Yesssss.

Concurring with the above, The King and the Clown is really quite heartbreaking. I watched it on an international flight last year and had to conceal a tear or two. And it kinda pushes the same crack-fic buttons that I get from manga, so I think yeah, it may appeal to you.

(Also, hi, I read your lj.)

Hi! Glad you commented!

Ohhhh crack-fic buttons. See, I read "gender bending" and was sold immediately.
